As part of its efforts to support education and training for archivists, librarians, and others charged with preserving and providing access to the rich documentary heritage of the state, the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board is pleased to announce a FREE workshop on “Copyright Issues for Digital Archives” on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 9 AM to 5 PM. The workshop will take place in the Tocker Learning Center at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission located at 1201 Brazos Street in Austin.

The workshop was developed by the Society of American Archives as part of its Digital Archives Specialist curriculum and is open to archivists, librarians, and staff members at Texas archival repositories who are charged with managing digital projects and who need to address copyright legal issues relating to the digital archives of their institutions. Registration is limited to 30 attendees.

This course covers copyright legal issues specific to archives of digital material, and examines the impact of electronic technologies on the long-held law and tenets of copyright, including digital rights management and acquiring and advising on the use of rights in records. Participants will review basic text of relevant federal statutes and significant case law as well as examine case studies. A brief review of copyright essentials will be provided to ground the discussion. The focus of the day will be on how to think through and identify options for resolving the most commonly encountered issues.

Funding for this workshop is provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission
