ALCTS e-Forum: Present and Future Challenges of Cataloging Special Collections Material

    May 22-23, 2018

Moderated by Gail Spears and Becky Skeen

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone! Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, discussion begins and ends at:

    Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

    Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

    Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

    Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

    This month’s topic:

Special Collections and Archives material, as well as other non-traditional formats, pose many cataloging challenges. These include not only the changes in cataloging standards and platforms, but also the added complexity of documenting the uniqueness of the materials. This e-forum will address some of these concerns and provide a collaborative arena for discussion on the cataloging of Special Collections and Archives materials. Topics for this e-forum may include, but are not limited to, difficulties of cataloging non-traditional formats, methods for learning and implementing new specialized standards, and creating local policies and workflows.

    Moderators:

Gail Spears currently catalogs literature and poetry for the Rose Library, Manuscript and Rare books Library at Emory University. She has worked as a Special Collections Cataloger for a little over eight years prior to which she cataloged for other general Technical Services as well as Law Libraries. Gail received her M.L.S. from Florida State University.

Becky Skeen is the Special Collections Cataloging Librarian at Utah State University’s Merrill-Cazier Library. Having cataloged Special Collections materials for many years, she currently manages a majority of Special Collections cataloging projects for her library and performs original and complex copy cataloging on a variety of material types and formats. Becky received her M.L.I.S. from the University of North Texas.

    What is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

For information about upcoming e-forums, please visit http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/e-forum.

    How to register:

You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you choose to leave the list. Find instructions for subscribing and unsubscribing online.
