    Why does the job exist?

    The Deputy Director of the New Mexico History Museum ensures that the museum operates efficiently and effectively, that all museum functions are coordinated in accordance with the NMHM strategic plan, and that the NMHM plays a collaborative role within DCA. Within this broad framework, the Deputy is directly responsible for museum administration, facilities, security, education & engagement, visitor services, and the Portal Program. The Deputy also fills in as the Acting Director when so designated, and provides senior leadership within the museum organization as a whole.

    How does it get done?

    The Deputy Director works closely with the NMHM Executive Director on all aspects of museum operation and development. As such, the Deputy facilitates implementation of the museum's strategic plan through cross-disciplinary oversight committees, monitors progress, and ensures timely reporting of results. Within this context, the Deputy helps other staff identify ways to overcome potential obstacles in order to achieve desired results.

    The Deputy also manages all campus operations and support services through supervision and professional development of 24 positions, including 6 subordinate supervisors. These functions include:
    (1) Maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of three buildings that encompass approximately 140,000 square feet: the Pete V. Domenici Building, Palace of the Governors, and Chavez History Library. The last two structures are significant history resources that must be cared for in accordance with preservation policies.
    (2) Security for the museum's facilities, approximately 100,000 visitors, and priceless collections of historic objects, documents, and photographs.
    (3) All administrative functions including: finances, personnel, information management, and office support. As such, the Deputy serves as the division's Point of Contact for the department's office of Human Relations.
    (4) Overseeing development and implementation of the museum's educational and engagement programs, visitor services-  including ticketing and tours, and the Native American Artisans Portal Program.

    Who are the customers?

    The New Mexico History Museum is part of the Museum of New Mexico system that is administered by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. As a government institution, the museum serves the interests of all New Mexico residents and visitors.

    Ideal Candidate

    (1) Experience working in a museum or other institution that combines interpretive activities with long-term care of historic
    materials or structures.
    (2) Experience supervising employees within a government agency.
    (3) Experience planning for, facilitating, and monitoring organizational change.
    (4) Experience building effective teams.
    (5) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

    Minimum Qualification

    A Bachelor's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.
