    Project Processing Archivist

    2 year position

    Salary $60,000 plus benefits

    The University of Virginia Library seeks a Project Processing Archivist. The Project Processing Archivist will process and create descriptions for recent acquisitions, employing reparative and social justice descriptive principles. The archivist is expected to work closely with other Special Collections staff during the course of the project and collaborate on description, outreach, instruction, and exhibitions for the collections addressed during the project. The archivist will propose processing plans, create resource records for recent acquisitions using ArchivesSpace, make preservation and condition assessments for the collections, provide reports on the status and progress of the project, and provide reference services for collections they have processed. This position will also oversee UVA’s involvement with the On These Grounds grant and supervise a student worker who will assist in this work. The project archivist may participate in unit-wide activities such as collection maintenance days, committee work, and support for special events such as receptions, lectures, and outreach programs.  

    Required Qualifications 

    • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Studies OR equivalent education and experience (relevant subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience) 

    • Experience appraising, arranging and describing archives and manuscript collections, preferably in a special collections library in an academic environment. 

    • Experience with current national archival and descriptive standards and best practices, including working knowledge of MARC format, EAD, DACS and archival collections management platforms (ArchivesSpace) 

    • A demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively with a team and independently. 

    • A demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student population. 

    • Evidence of analytical, organizational, communication, project, and time management skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget and in accordance with task/project parameters. 

    Preferred Qualifications 

    • Minimum of two years’ experience working as an archivist. 

    • Processing experience with handwritten materials. 

    • Knowledge of conservation and preservation needs of archival collections 

    • Understanding of EAC-CPF. 

    • Experience processing born digital/digitized material. 

    • Evidence of participation in local, state, regional, national, or international professional or scholarly associations.
