The Rosenberg Library’s Galveston & Texas History Center in Galveston, Texas, seeks a processing intern to assist with the Moody Family Papers and Business Records. Under the supervision of the Managerof Special Collections, the intern will gain hands-on and on-site experience in the archival profession. Primary responsibilities include learning how to physically assess, arrange, and re-house materials, as appropriate.
The intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:
- Standard archival practices, such as collection processing and cataloging
- Basic preservation techniques, such as proper handling, housing, and stabilizing collection materials and awareness of storage and environmental conditions
- Assessing incoming collections by reviewing the deed of gifts and contracts, and determining terms of access and intellectual property status
- Creating item level records in Recollect, a digital asset management system
Working conditions
- Sitting at a computer screen
- Physically lifting and moving materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Maneuvering book trucks weighing up to 100 lbs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program or recent graduate
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently in an environment where consultation, flexibility, and cooperation are essential
• Strong decision-making skills
Preferred - coursework completed in archival studies information science.
Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
Terms of Employment: Temporary position (40 hours/week for 5 weeks). Tuesday – Saturday, on-site.
