    Position Description

     

    Official Title:  Archivist         Salary Group: Unclassified 2                       Job Code:  

     

    Summary

    Function:  Provide assistance to Archives users and ensure security of collections.  Perform specialized duties in processing varied and large volumes of materials in the Archives.

     

    Scope:  Perform duties in the areas of Public Service and/or Technical Service in the Archives of the Big Bend.

     

    Duties:

    Essential:  Provide specialized reference assistance to patrons of the reading room of the Archives for collections which document the history and culture of the Trans-Pecos region of Texas and corresponding border area of northern Mexico.  Provide bibliographic instruction to classes and others.  Process archival materials according to current professional archival standards and best practices and trends in archival administration. Oversee Archives operations as assigned.  Maintain operations in absence of Sr. Archivist.

     

    Non Essential:  Other Duties as assigned.

     

    Supervision:

    Received:  Report to Sr. Archivist.

     

    Given:  May supervise Archives Assistant, Student Workers, Digital Imaging Technician, Volunteers.

     

    Education: 

    Required:  Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or a master’s degree in archival studies, history, or other closely related field with a concentration in archival management and theory.

     

    Preferred:   Master’s degree in Archival Studies.

     

    Equipment/Skills: 

    Required: Experience working in an archives, special collections, or library including reference and/or archival processing, arrangement, and description of collection materials.  Demonstrated ability to plan and work independently and collaboratively; to work with patrons/customers and provide exceptional customer service; to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the university community.  Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.  Knowledge of current professional archival standards, descriptive metadata standards including MARC and DACS.

     

    Preferred:  Experience working in a service environment; supervisory experience; Knowledge of current professional standards and best practices for and preservation of a variety of formats of archival materials; experience with MARC, DACS, and data structure standards relevant to archival control of collection materials including EAD.

     

    Working Conditions: 

    Usual:  Library/Standard Office.  Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.  Manual dexterity.  Climbing of stairs, ladders.  Periods of sitting, walking, standing, and bending. Lifting and moving boxes up to 40 lbs.  Exposure to book dust, mold, and fluorescent lighting.  40 hours, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Security sensitive. 

     

    Special:  Occasional evening and weekend hours, travel, and out-of-office activities.
