    Requirements

    Candidate must have a Master's degree from an ALA accredited college or university in library science or information and library science, and two (2) years of professional experience as a Librarian specializing in Southwest history, culture or literature.

     
    Licenses and Certificates:  None.
      General Purpose

    Under general supervision, supervise the daily activities and operations of the Border Heritage section Southwest Section of the Main Library.
     

    Typical Duties

    Direct activities to preserve the history and culture of El Paso and the Southwest area.  Involves:  Develop procedures for accessing non-book materials.  Utilize methods to preserve genealogy, Raza, photographs, architectural plans, manuscripts, birth and death certificates and other non-book collections. Select book and non-book materials for purchase and maintain for the total scope and quality of the collection of Southwest Border Heritage materials.  Solicit gifts of local history materials from families, businesses, and organizations of the locale and region.  Assist public, students, historians and architects to find information specific to the Southwest.

     

    Plan, develop and implement the SouthwestBorder Heritage program and events.  Involves:  Meet with and aAttending local historical and genealogy workshops and meet participants to keep informed of history/genealogy projects. Assist historians and architects to find original photographs and blueprints for restoration of historic buildings.  Assist patrons with historical research.  Prepare and direct research projects for Genealogy and Southwest volunteers.  Act as reference and information librarian for the Southwest and general reference.  Prepare exhibits, special programs and events.  Work with Marketing Coordinator to publicize the Southwest Collection Border Heritage collection and the library events through press releases and media interviews.  Represent the library at community organizations with an interest in El Paso history and/or genealogy.  
     
    Oversee designated administrative activities.  Involves:  Manage resources to best meet the needs of the patrons and community.  Manage the Border Heritage the Southwest section budget and approve requisitions and purchase orders.  Develop and justify proposed Southwest section annual budget.  Research and liaison with local, regional and national Southwest historians and genealogists.  Join and participate in professional organizations, list serves, conferences and community groups. Coordinate special events, programs and activities with other sections.

     

    Supervise assigned regular and volunteer staff.  Involves:  Schedule, assign, and review operational and procedural activities.  Prioritize and coordinate Border Heritage Southwest section activities.  Instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance.  Provide training and development.    Enforce personnel rules, regulations, and work standards. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Interview applicants.  Recommend hiring, termination, transfer, discipline, merit pay, or other employee status changes.
