Head of Archives

The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries invites applications from collaborative and innovative candidates for the position of Head of Archives. Knowledge of a broad range of archival theory and practice based on training and professional experience is essential. The Head of Archives works within a collaborative team environment and will report to the Director of the Special Collections, Archives & Preservation Department. The Head of Archives will be responsible for overseeing the appraisal, acquisition, donor relations, accessioning, arrangement, rehousing, description, preservation, access, and outreach for records and manuscripts collections in a wide variety of formats. A significant part of the responsibilities of this position include research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Requirements:

●       ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent

●       Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion

●       Experience in accessioning, arrangement, processing and description of archives, manuscripts, and multi-format collections, including born-digital, audiovisual, and photographic materials

●       Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging archival theory and practice, national standards, relevant legal and ethical regulations and best practices that govern the arrangement, description and use of archival materials, particularly DACS and MPLP

●       Supervisory experience

●       Demonstrated experience writing finding aids using tools and standards such as ArchivesSpace, Archivists' Toolkit, and EAD

●       Sensitivity to matters of confidentiality, copyright, and other policy and legal aspects of managing and providing access to archival materials

●       Demonstrated ability to cultivate collegiality and to work effectively with colleagues, patrons, and donors       

●       Excellent interpersonal, presentation, facilitation, and communication skills

●       Potential for research, scholarly work, and professional service

Desirable Qualifications:

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:

●       Coursework or degree concentration in archives

●       More than 2 years experience in accessioning, arrangement, processing, and description of archives, manuscripts, and multi-format collections, including born-digital, audiovisual, and photographic materials

●       Familiarity with emerging technologies for managing archival collections, including digital repositories and digital preservation systems (e.g., DSpace, Archivematica, Arkivum, etc.), and digital exhibit systems (e.g., LUNA, Omeka, ContentDM, Collective Access, etc.)

●       Experience communicating and negotiating with potential donors

●       Experience collaborating across units/departments in an academic environment

●       Successful track record of securing grant funding

●       Demonstrated experience or professional development related to strategic planning, change management, supervision, or leadership

●       Record of research and publication and national service

Appointment and Salary:  

Successful candidates will be appointed as full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty members.  Rank and salary will depend upon professional experience. The minimum starting salary is $60,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA-CREF administered retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.
