    Job Summary:

     

    The Digital Scholarship Librarian reports to the Director of Fondren Library and Head of Research Services and provides leadership for setting the vision and creating the underlying framework for collaboration, initiating new services, and developing expertise to support research, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship. Existent and emergent areas of support include: digital scholarship, data management, copyright, digital preservation, GIS, Open Access, and research impact metrics. 

    The Digital Scholarship Librarian is the Coordinator of the SMU Libraries' Research and Scholarly Communications Team (RaSC); works as a nexus in coordinating with the Head of Library Systems, the Digital Preservation Librarian, IT, and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) to create a seamless, integrated set of services for research support and advise on software/hardware needs. The position also manages SMU Scholar, the institutional repository.

     

    Essential Functions:

     

    Plans and directs the support of research and digital scholarship; provides guidance and project management to faculty and students on software, tools, and projects; coordinates the work of SMU Libraries' RaSC Team and collaborates with staff to strengthen activities and programs related to digital scholarship; seeks opportunities to collaborate with campus stakeholders; serves as liaison to ORGS. 

    Manages SMU Scholar: collects, stores, and preserves intellectual/creative output, including ETDs, from campus constituents; maintains policies/procedures for the repository, including research datasets; collects/reports usage data; coordinates with librarians, IT, and others to provide outreach, programming, and instruction related to OA, authors' rights, and issues impacting research environment. 

    Supervises the Project Director of GIS@SMU: Initiative for Spatial Literacy (part-time position) by setting priorities and direction with the Project Director and others for the GIS@SMU: Initiative for Spatial Literacy, including the GIS Lab in Fondren Library. Develops and supports opportunities for faculty/librarian partnerships and projects in spatial literacy and spatial humanities.

     

     

     
     

    Education and Experience:

     

    Masters in Library Science or equivalent degree from an American Library Association accredited institution is required. 

    Minimum of two years of experience working in an academic library or research environment supporting research and scholarship. 

    Minimum of one year supervisory experience is required. 

    Project management experience and evidence of collaborating with teams and integrated workflows is preferred. 

    Outreach experience and knowledge of marketing techniques is preferred. 

    Experience with or interest in advancing Open Access and monitoring its impact on the scholarly communication landscape is preferred. 

    Experience with institutional repository systems such as bepress Digital Commons is desirable. 

    GIS software and architecture knowledge is a plus. 

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

     

    Candidate must demonstrate a broad knowledge of issues and trends in digital scholarship, copyright, publisher policies on archiving, metadata schemas, digital preservation practices, and related areas. 

    Knowledge of data management requirements for federal grants and publishers is desirable. 

    Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to conduct effective outreach with faculty and students across all disciplines. 

    Candidate must demonstrate strong written communication skills with a strong focus on attention to detail. 

    Candidate must possess highly developed organizational and time management skills to effectively manage projects and prioritize multiple tasks. 

    Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to think collaboratively, strategically, creatively, as well as, devise solutions. 

    Candidate must be able to work independently and cohesively within a team environment.
