    Hello Archivists,

I have been approached by a professor wanting to use our collections as a cloud-sourcing transcription component for a history class. Have any of you been involved with this type of project? Would you be willing to share your insights about this work and advise on setting up such a project? I have looked at NARA, Smithsonian, and FromThePage, and am aware of their endeavors in this area. I am more interested in college classes that have used this as an internal component, and did not plan on website publication of the end product. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Benna,

I can personally recommend FromThePage. The owner/developers, Ben & Sarah Brumfield, are great to work with and do free consultations so you can run all your questions by them before you commit to anything. They won't hard-sell you either. Early on in the development of FTP, they did an internal classroom project with a professor in Classics at UT. This project helped them develop functionality for private projects, and they've supported others since then. Other platforms may offer the same thing, I don't know. But I do know that Ben & Sarah are good people and a pleasure to work with. Tell 'em I sent ya! (Full disclosure: We are friends, and I used to consult for them, but I am not getting a kickback or any such thing!)

    Good luck with your project,

    Jennifer

    Hi Jennifer,

I'm sorry I didn't respond online before. I did wind up working with From The Page. They are great and it is turning out to be a wonderful project for her class. Thank you so much for the recommendation!
