Research Project (UVA IRB-SBS #4250): “A Survey of Archival Revolutions: Transitional Moments and Paradigmatic Shifts in Archival Enterprise, 1980-2020”

With support from the SAA Foundation, we (Steven Booth and Brenda Gunn) are conducting research that explores the history of archival revolutions and transitional moments, from 1980 to 2020. The project employs David B. Gracy II's concept of an archival revolution (articulated during his 1983 SAA presidential address on the Archives and Society Initiative) as a starting point and a framework for examining transitional moments in the profession. The project seeks to understand the impact these paradigmatic shifts, in theory, ideas, practice, and perceptions have had on the field and how archivists and the public perceive the field. Our goals include: defining archival revolutions; the compilation of paradigmatic shifts, in theory, ideas, practice, and perceptions over the last forty years; dissemination of research through articles and presentations; and submission of a book prospectus.

The Archival Revolutions Project intends to create multiple focus group sessions comprised of 5-8 archive workers who represent the field and bring differing life and professional experiences to the sessions. We’ve reached out to various archival groups within SAA, and to several regional groups, including the SSA.

Would you be willing to participate in a one-hour, focus group session to share your perspective with us? To express interest in participating in a focus group, complete the form found at the following link:

Focus groups will be held online via Zoom for 60 minutes. Before the focus group sessions, selected participants will need to sign a consent form. After completion of the session, participants will receive an honorarium of $50.

This research project is guided by the Society of American Archivists Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about the study. Thank you so much for your consideration.
