The National Science Foundation recently awarded the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and the California Botanic Garden nearly $1 million to support the digitization and linking of plant specimens and other archival materials. BRIT will digitize the field photographs of American botanist Sherwin Carlquist and the California Botanic Garden will be digitizing Carlquist’s biological collections concurrently, which include plant specimens and wood anatomy slides. This represents an effort to create an Extended Specimen Network, which takes an individual specimen and creates linkages between it and various other types of preparations and representations of that given specimen.
