LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Monte Monroe, the head of Texas Tech’s Southwest Collection archive, has a new title - the state historian for Texas.

Monroe, who was sworn in Wednesday in a ceremony at the State Capitol, becomes just the fourth Texas State Historian, and first from West Texas.

Monroe is also the first archivist. As he puts it, he’s trained to work with the “nuts and bolts” of history, like diaries, personal papers and artifacts relating directly to history that would otherwise sit in a distant relative’s closet.
