Approximately two months ago, Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library archivist Monte Monroe stood in the historic senate chamber of the Texas State Capitol to be appointed Texas State Historian by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Since that day, Monroe has been serving as the fourth Texas State Historian, a role he will fulfill until September 2020, when his term expires.

“I am the first Texas State Historian ever from West Texas, and I am the first from a Tier one institution,” Monroe said.
