Title: Preserving Moving Images: Building Confidence with Archival Media Formats
Description:
Cultural workers face a challenging lack of hands-on educational opportunities to learn the basics of preserving archival audiovisual materials. Our workshop addresses the growing need for media preservation skills among archivists, historians, curators, genealogists, and generally those who work with historic materials by walking attendees through a simulated media preservation assessment. Participants will learn how to identify common media formats, conduct visual deterioration assessments, physical inspection skills, proper film handling, and film splicing techniques. Attendees will become confident in their ability to identify and preserve analog film and video formats when encountering them in the field, and this workshop will prepare attendees with the necessary competencies to lead their organizations’ audiovisual preservation strategies by becoming de facto media archivists.
Summary: Format: Small, classroom-style (10-20 participants is ideal) Target Audience: Cultural workers, archivists, historians, genealogists, and those working with archival materials Learning objectives: To become familiar with AV materials, their prominent conservation issues, and proper handling Hands-on components: Using real world items, TAMI will provide hand winds, splicers, analog video formats, teaching films, and other tangible items in order to walk students through the steps of proper cleaning, inspection, and handling of audiovisual materials. Students will also track data on a media preservation log.
