    The University of Virginia Library seeks applications for a Processing Archivist for a three-year term. Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Processing Archivist’s primary duties are to process and create descriptions for University Archives and archival collections relating to Virginia history and politics. The Processing Archivist will propose processing plans, arrange records in both physical and digital formats, create descriptions using ArchivesSpace, make preservation and condition assessments for the collections, provide reports on the status and progress of processing work, and participate in regular reference desk service in the reading room. They may also provide support for the transfer of records to the archives and hire and supervise student workers. The Processing Archivist will implement an inclusive and reparative framework in their archival processing work and other regular duties. The successful candidate in this position recognizes the importance of reparative work in this field and strives to create equitable and thoughtful practices within archival processing. 

    The Processing Archivist is expected to work closely with other Library staff, and may participate in unit-wide, Library-wide, and/or University-wide activities such as collection maintenance days, committee work, collaborations with University Records Management, and support for special events such as receptions, lectures, and outreach programs for Small Special Collections and the UVA Library.  

    Required Qualifications: 

    • ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree or related advanced degree. A bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree. 
    • Coursework covering archival theory and practice, including its applications for both physical and born-digital content. 
    • High degree of familiarity with archival arrangement and description, DACS, EAD, and MPLP strategy. 
    • High degree of familiarity with ArchivesSpace or other collections management platforms. 
    • Ability to read and interpret handwritten cursive. 
    • Valid driver’s license issued by a state or commonwealth within the United States, or willingness to obtain one upon hire for the purpose of driving.

    Anticipated starting salary: $65,000.  

    Priority review will be given to applications received by January 12, 2025. This is a three-year term limited position. Term continuation will be dependent on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. An informational webinar is scheduled for December 18, 2024 from NOON - 1:00 PM Eastern Time
