Archives sessions at TSHA

    Dear Fellow Archivist:

We are writing to ask you to consider organizing and submitting a panel for the 2017 annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association, to be held March 2-4 in Houston.

Each year we hear archivists lamenting the fact that there are so few TSHA sessions involving members of our profession. Good news: for 2017 there will be one and possibly two sessions focusing on archives and aimed at archivists.

We’re suggesting something a little different: sessions involving both historians and archivists, and possibly others who use archives in their work: journalists, genealogists, teachers, writers of fiction and nonfiction -- and aimed at all annual meeting participants, regardless of occupation or background. The organizers of the meeting have encouraged us to give this a try. We would like to encourage you.

TSHA panels traditionally have a chair and three presenters or a chair, two presenters, and a commentator. To allow maximum diversity in presentations, we encourage you to plan on three presenters, perhaps a historian, a journalist, and an archivist, or two historians and an archivist. Alternatively, you might have a historian and a teacher as presenters, with an archivist as commentator.

There’s no theme for 2017, so please feel free to choose any topic. The idea is to demonstrate the kinds of fruitful interactions historians, archivists, and other archives users experience on a daily basis and to allow archivists to bring our knowledge to bear on matters of controversy among historians or historians and others.

Proposals are due Monday, February 1, but we may be able to arrange a little wiggle room if you need it. Here’s a link to the the call for proposals, which sets forth the requirements for a complete session proposal: https://tshasecurepay.com/annual-meeting/call-for-proposals-2017.php

If you’d like assistance in coming up with a topic, finding archivist or non-archivist panel members, or securing a chair, we are here to help. If you’d like to have someone review your proposal to make sure it is complete and in compliance with the call for proposals, we will be glad to do that as well. Please feel free to contact us at marian@txcatholic.org.

    With best wishes,
