    The Mary and John Gray Library at Lamar University seeks an innovative and creative individual to join our team as University Archivist. Reporting to the Dean of the Library, the University Archivist provides leadership for the ongoing development, operation, and promotion of the University Archives and Special Collections and serves as the University Records Manager, leading and further developing a robust records management program. The Archivist will also participate in the projected creation of a new, unified facility for Archives and Special Collections. The Archivist will work closely with the Dean of the Library in seeking external funding for the growth and development of the unit and its collections, and will actively seek opportunities for regional, statewide, and national partnerships. The Archivist will supervise a department consisting of one full-time librarian and two full-time staff members. This is a 12-month, non-tenured faculty position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Beaumont is a Texas Gulf Coast city located between Houston and New Orleans.     Salary Range: 65,000 – 80,000 (Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications

    Duties:   

    • Develop and maintain an effective records management program. 
    • Organize and create finding aids for the archival and special collections using current best practices.  
    • Develop a long-term vision for the unit that fits the strategic direction of the university and library. 
    • Develop and disseminate appropriate policies and procedures, including a collection development policy. 
    • Develop and maintain the unit’s record of provenance and usage rights. 
    • Develop and maintain an outreach program, including working with university faculty to increase usage of unit resources in support of learning and research, creating exhibits, publications, and programs that highlight our important collections. 
    • Provide reference assistance for archival and special collections materials, as needed. 
    • Work with the Dean to develop sources of external funding, including donations and grants. 
    • Solicit appropriate materials. 
    • Maintain and update professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis. 
    • Perform other duties as assigned. 

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

    • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in the archival, special collections, and records management fields, including familiarity with technologies and best practices in the areas of organization, digitization, preservation, and provision of access.  
    • A demonstrated desire and record of developing professional skills and knowledge. 
    • Familiarity and experience with digital tools, such as ArchiveSpace, institutional repositories (IR), Photoshop, and a high level of familiarity with Microsoft Office products. 
    • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
    • Supervisory experience. 
    • Ability to work independently and with internal and external constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, researchers, and members of the local community.  
    • Understanding of the value of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, particularly in regard to the appraisal and description of information resources. 
    • Preferred: A record of accomplishment in the area of scholarship and/or professional service activities. 

    Education: 

    • A Master’s degree in Library or information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is required. 
    • Desired: Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA). 
    • Desired: A second graduate degree in History or other appropriate discipline. 

    Experience: 

    • A minimum of three years of full-time experience in Archives, Special Collections and/or Records Management in an academic environment is required. 
    • Preferred: 1+ years of experience working in a records management program.
