    Position Description

    Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

    About the Department and/or College

    Ranked among the top third of academic research libraries nationally, Texas Tech University Libraries serve as a vital partner with students and faculty in their learning endeavors. The University Libraries' system is comprised of: (1) University Library, (2) Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, and the (3) Architecture Library. The University Library is a patent and trademark depository and is one of two regional depositories for U.S. government documents in Texas. The central focus of the Texas Tech University Libraries is to make available 3.72 million physical volumes, electronic resources, special collections, and archives, and to offer services to students and faculty that enable academic and research success.

    Major/Essential Functions

    • Oversee, manage, and coordinate the processing and digitization of audio-visual materials from various departments in an archival setting. Responsibilities involve supervision of a work unit and/or the undertaking of specialized work requiring expertise.
    • Work with support staff within the audio-visual department and with other departments to accomplish audio-visual processing and digitization goals.
    • Oversee archival staff assignments and assist with their projects as needed.
    • Continuing education in best practices for audio-visual digitization, preservation, arrangement, and description of A/V materials.
    • Create finding aids for audio-visual materials.
    • Maintain various audio-visual holdings databases and spreadsheets.
    • Assist with reference requests for audio-visual items. Ensures successful completion of requests in a timely manner.
    • Repair and maintain analog equipment and scanners (1/4" audio tape, audio cassettes, u-matic, VHS, film scanners, etc.).
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of analog and digital audio-visual technologies.
    • Experience working with audio-visual digitization software (i.e. Adobe Audition, Premiere, Wavelab).
    • Attention to detail, planning, and organizational skills are necessary for managing complex projects.
    • Ability to collaborate with all departments in the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library to execute the processing and digitization of audio-visual materials.
    • Works well in a fluid environment.
    • Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, attentive to details, and possesses a critical and discerning eye and ear for digitizing. 

    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in archival practice from an ALA accredited archival or library science program OR  a master's in history OR a related field.
    • Two or more years of experience in an academic archive or special collections library working with audio-visual materials.
    • Experience with current national archival and descriptive standards and best practices including knowledge of EAD, MARC format, Dublin Core, and other related metadata schemas for the description of archival collections.
    • Solid understanding of archival processes and best practices for audio-visual materials.
    • An interest in the history and culture of the Southwest.
    • Comprehension of audio/video copyright issues.
    • Familiarity with repairing and maintaining analog equipment and scanners (1/4” audio tape, audio cassettes, umatic, VHS, film scanners, etc.).

    Pay Statement

    Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as, the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan on the Human Resources webpage.

    Travel Required: Up to 25%
