The University of Arizona Libraries invites applications for a Digital Production Technician to support programmatic digitization efforts at the University of Arizona Libraries, situated in the newly established Digital Production Lab within the Digital Preservation and Production Unit of Collection Services. The UAL digitization program strives to optimize access to our collections, preserve materials, support teaching, enable scholarly engagement, and engage with the wider community. We seek an enthusiastic and creative colleague who will join us in these efforts, which bring together the expertise of a cross-functional, cross-departmental group of professionals from across the Libraries.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Uses an array of imaging equipment and software to generate preservation quality surrogates of a variety of physical formats, in conformance with established best practices, documented workflows, and instructions.
• Uses advanced postprocessing software (for example, Capture One CH, Adobe Creative Suite, ABBYY FineReader, and GoldenThread NXT) to perform quality assurance and postprocessing tasks to prepare surrogates for ingest into preservation and access systems.
• Participates in quality control of both in-house and outsourced projects to ensure compliance with established output parameters.
• Manages daily operation of lab equipment and works with the Digitization Services and Lab Manager and TeSS to perform basic troubleshooting as issues arise (scanners, reprographic camera systems, lighting).
• Consults with Digitization Services and Lab Manager and Preventative Conservator as needed in proper handling, staging, and movement of unique and rare collection materials. Performs simple conservation treatments on materials to be digitized.
• Collaborates with the Digitization Services and Lab Manager to identify the most efficient workflows for digitizing materials safely, while meeting agreed upon project output specifications.
• Accurately tracks and documents imaging activities in project tracking and project management systems.
• Works with the Digitization Services and Lab Manager and Content Stewards to generate inventories and manifests of incoming project materials.
• Working closely with the Digitization Services and Lab Manager, contributes to feasibility and cost evaluations of incoming projects.
• Researches and maintains awareness of emergent technologies and trends in imaging for cultural heritage institutions and participates in communal strategic direction setting within the DPP unit. 5%
• Coordinates the work of students, including scheduling, answering questions, and training on imaging equipment and software.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience required.
• 1 year of relevant work experience.

• Experience using high-resolution overhead capture systems, such as Phase One, Hasselblad, or others.
• Experience with color managed workflows, including the use of calibrated monitors, color calibration software, and device and object targets.
• Experience with Python, the command line, or other methods for creating scripts to automate tasks.
• Experience working with RAW workflow software such as Capture One or Lightroom.
• Experience with testing, refining, and documenting workflows at a library, archives, or research institution.
• Advanced training or experience in photography, studio lighting, and techniques.
• Coursework or work experience in an archives or Special Collections environment.
