Functional Job Title: Archivist
Class Summary: The Archivist is the senior collections processing position at the Arkansas State Archives and works under the supervision of the Archival Manager for Technology and Access, who is also responsible for overseeing the division’s digital imaging initiatives. As such, the Archivist supervises all archives and records accessioning, processing, and description activities. The Archivist supervises the work of two (2) Archival Assistants, one (1) Archival Technician and a rotating number of part-time and contract staff, as well as interns and volunteers who assist with processing. The position is governed by state and federal laws and departmental and division policy.
Examples of Work:
- 1. Maintain accurate records pertaining to collections and records received according to chain of custody, donor information, value of materials, and temporary and permanent storage locations.
- 2. Make and track processing assignments to ensure timely access to State Archives collections and records.
- 3. Provide authoritative information and assistance to processors under supervision on best practices for collections and records handling, storage and description.
- 4. Work with other sections within the division to address conservation and preservation needs of incoming and existing materials, and to promote new acquisitions of Archives.
- 5. Work with state agency liaisons to identify government records having permanent value and facilitate transfers to the State Archives.
- 6. Work with county public officials to facilitate preservation of public records at the State Archives, as appropriate.
- 7. Maintain order of archival storage areas and report any issues of concern to appropriate authorities (ABA, division director, Conservator).
- 8. Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned.
Working Relationships: The Archivist has regular contact with the division director, division Archival Managers, state agency liaisons, county officials, and donors.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Demonstrated supervisory skills.
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
Knowledge of archival processing best practices.
Knowledge of national, state and local history.
Competent in the use of Microsoft Word, particularly Word, Access and Power Point.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications (Applicants must meet or exceed): The formal educational equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, English, library science or a related field; plus two years of archival or library experience. Supervisory experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who have had experience with archival processing and supervising work in this arena.
Special Requirements: Ability to lift 40 pounds. A pre-employment criminal background check is required. Position is subject to drug screening.
