    Digital Archivist

    Fondren Library seeks a service-oriented, well-organized, technically savvy, and self-motivated digital archivist. This position will work to update, expand, and maintain the digital preservation program in the library’s special collections department, the Woodson Research Center. This position will report to the head of special collections and collaborate closely with professional archivist staff.

    Responsibilities

    Processes digital collection material for long term storage; Updates policies and procedures for managing born-digital materials for organization and description, ingest, storage, preservation and access; Monitors both long-term storage environments and digital processing environments for integrity and space planning; Determines priorities for digitization to establish digitization projects; Works closely with the metadata team; Maintains close working relationships with Digital Scholarship Services related to the development of the Center’s digital materials; Finds opportunities to collaborate through campus initiatives and projects dealing with born-digital materials.

    Requirements include: 

    MLS/MLIS or Master of Science in Information with a specialization in Archives & Records Management, from an ALA-accredited graduate school or equivalent degree.

    Five years related experience with digital archival collections or other digital library-related work and/or experience in processing digital archival collections; including developing descriptive, technical and administrative metadata. May substitute additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the experience requirement.

    Superior verbal and written communication skills; Proven customer service skills; Ability to remain calm and flexible in stressful situations; Demonstrated ability to perform precise, detailed work quickly and accurately.

    Preferred qualifications: 

    Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) certification.

    Two years or more professional experience in developing policies and procedures for long term digital stewardship in an academic library, special collection, cultural heritage repository; Experience with collection management and/or institutional repository applications such as ArchivesSpace, DSpace, Archive-It, Archivematica; Experience with content on a variety of storage media, relative interfaces and file systems; Experience managing students and coordinating staff on digital projects; Experience with digital forensics workflows.

    Script writing in Python, Perl, or other languages; Reading from and writing to API systems; Familiarity with processing email collections; Familiarity with library platform Alma/Primo; Demonstrated knowledge of metadata content, structure, and preservation standards including MARC, EAD, DACS, MODS and other relevant metadata standards.

    Salary & benefits:  $59,900 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; a range of retirement options including TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
