Chair: Andrea Weddle, Texas A&M University‐Commerce
University archives function to collect, preserve, and make accessible records of enduring value to
their institutions. Increasingly these records are produced and distributed to faculty, staff, students,
and alumni in digital formats, with the university websites and social media playing a central role.
Faced with this, the Special Collections Department of James G. Gee Library at Texas A&M
University‐Commerce has undertaken a project to capture and preserve the university’s web
presence – from official pages to social media outlets. This session will provide an introduction to
web archiving, including a breakdown of the most common subscription services and open source
options. It will include examples of how archives are utilizing web archiving to supplement their
special collections and university archives and tips for garnering administrative support for such an
endeavor.
