During Open Access week, UT Arlington libraries' is doing a day dedicated to Wikipedia. We are featuring a presentation by archivist Michael Barera about his experiences as a Wikimedian.

Following Michael's presentation I will be moderating a lunch panel on using Wikipedia in the classroom. This panel includes faculty from UT Dallas' Arts/Technology/Emerging Cultures department, UT Arlingtons' school of Journalism, and SMU's department of Anthropology. Come learn how you can incorporate Wikipedia into your curriculum.

Bios: 

Michael Barera is an Archivist at Texas A&M University-Commerce.  He is a native of Michigan and a graduate of the University of Michigan, from which he received his Bachelor’s degree in History and his Master’s degree in Archives and Records Management / Preservation of Information.  He has been a Wikipedian since 2006, and is highly active on the English Wikipedia, where he has created over 60 articles, and on Wikimedia Commons, where he has contributed over 11,000 photographs.  He was the Wikipedian in Residence at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor in 2013, and has presented on this and other Wikipedia-related experiences at The Ohio State University as well as the University of Michigan.  He was also a member of the Michigan Wikipedians student club at the University of Michigan before he graduated in 2014.

Jessica Lott is a Ph.D. candidate in medical anthropology with a Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies at Southern Methodist University. Her research interests are gender and power, reproductive health, and kinship and personhood. She teaches undergraduate students about gender in both the Anthropology Department and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. Along with SMU Science Librarian Jennifer Sullivan, she recently won a stipend from SMU libraries to develop an assignment to teach information literacy in her class “Gender and Sex Roles: A Cross-Cultural Perspective” utilizing Wikipedia. Jessica has a background in Writing Centers and strives to help students feel ownership over their research and writing, while helping them formulate questions around gender and sexuality as global concepts. 

Lindsey Joyce is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at The University of Texas at Dallas. Her industry experience and research interests involve the construction and dissemination of user-centric digital content, especially within the realm of digital interactive narrative games. Currently, Dr. Joyce teaches courses in Digital Content Design and Game Studies.  The name of the assignment used was “Networked Learning: Knowledge Sharing and Community-Based Editing in Wikipedia”
