The Vietnam Center and Sam Johnson Vietnam Archive (VNCA) at Texas Tech University is currently accepting applications for a newly created Visiting Assistant Archivist position. This is a full-time, 2-year, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track faculty position.
Responsibilities for this position include conducting in-depth oral history interviews with individuals involved in various aspects of the Vietnam War and the Vietnam War Era. Successful candidates will be required to conduct background research in both primary and secondary sources in pursuance of quality oral history interviews and will be responsible for the acquisition, cataloging, and maintenance of the oral history collections and their electronic database records. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to deal tactfully with individuals, and sensitive issues.
Candidates may be required to travel to conduct outreach and awareness initiatives to veterans’ reunions; conduct periodic oral history workshops with interested groups; supervise student editors and transcriptionists; and assist in various activities within the Vietnam Center and Archive in pursuance of its larger mission.
The ideal candidate will have both academic and administrative experience and must be able to work independently on long-term projects, while at the same time performing an array of short-term tasks in a collaborative setting. The position requires excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and broad familiarity with computer technologies is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications: Graduate degree in 20th Century U.S. History, Library Science, or related field; specialization in military history and the history of the Vietnam War; experience in the theory and practice of oral history; experience conducting oral history interviews; and a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse populations.
Salary: $48,000 + benefits.
