This position is a Pay Band 75

    Why does the job exist?

The Supervisory Curator for Interpretation provides leadership and management essential for creating museum experiences that connect visitors with New Mexico's past, present, and future in informative, inspiring, and entertaining ways. The position is central to answering the question, "Why does history matter?", of helping people create better futures by understanding past events, and of bridging social, cultural, and political differences. Although grounded in traditional exhibition development using historic objects, images, and documents, the Supervisory Curator must also be adept at engaging people within their own respective contexts and of using interactive, digital, and collaborative techniques.

    How does it get done?

The position facilitates development of high-quality exhibitions and online content, ensures the interpretive program is well coordinated with the NMHM strategic plan, and supports management and development of the museum's collections. More specifically, the Supervisory Curator for Interpretation:

    (1) Supervises and oversees professional development of three Curators and one Printing Specialist
    (2) Manages planning and development of the museum's interpretive activities on a multi-year basis. This includes long-term and changing exhibitions, traveling exhibits, online content, publications and articles, and the Palace Press.
    (3) Oversees public engagement related to interpretive projects. Such interactions range from soliciting information to formal collaboration, as well as facilitated dialog over complex social issues.
    (4) Supports management, use, and development of the museum's collections of historic objects, documents, and photographs-especially with respect to acquisition of material from under-represented aspects of New Mexico history.
    (5) In collaboration with the other curators, manages accounts for interpretive projects, prepares grant applications, and supports fundraising as led by the museum's Executive Director.
In addition, the Supervisory Curator is personally responsible for development of exhibitions and other interpretive projects on various aspects of New Mexico history-especially topics related to the 20th century.

    Who are the customers?

Although out-of-state visitors make up the largest portion of the museum's attendance, the primary beneficiaries of the museum's interpretive program are intended to be New Mexico residents--from all corners of the state and of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Within this broad framework, the Supervisory Curator is expected to pay particular attention to underserved, Native American, and low-income communities and to help them connect with New Mexico history-including their own.

    Ideal Candidate

    (1) A university degree in the humanities or liberal arts, preferably with an emphasis in 20th-century American history
    (2) Experience developing traditional museum exhibitions that use historic objects, documents, or photographs to create meaningful learning opportunities.
    (3) Experience with non-traditional interpretive activities such as those modeled by the Coalition of Sites of Conscience, use of digital technology, innovative online programming, or collaboration with guest curators from under-represented communities.
    (4) Experience managing a multi-year interpretive program--including development of budgets and assistance with fundraising.
    (5) Experience supervising and overseeing professional development of museum curators or other professionals in related fields
Working Conditions (Example: Office setting, exposure to VisualNideo Display terminal (VDD and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs).
