    Why does the job exist?

    The Supervisor of Education & Engagement manages development and implementation of a high-quality educational program for the New Mexico History Museum, oversees the Native American Artisans Program (Portal Program), facilitates public engagement for all museum programs, and coordinates educational activities with other museum functions in accordance with the NMHM strategic plan.

    How does it get done?

    Working in conjunction with 2 other educators, this supervisory position is responsible for planning and coordination of all the museum's educational activities including on-site visits, on-line resources, and remote instruction. The program supports state learning standards for social studies with an emphasis on history, and is designed to benefit students from pre-K to the 12th grade throughout New Mexico. Close coordination with teachers and expertise in object-base, experiential, and project-base learning are central to the museum's approach to education. The educational team is also responsible for the museum's volunteer program, liaison with the Friends of History, docent training and scheduling, and development of supplemental materials to complement permanent and changing exhibitions. In addition to managing this program, the Supervisor is expected to actively participate in instruction and/or development of  educational materials, manage accounts associated with assigned areas of responsibility, and support fund raising efforts led by the museum's Executive Director. The position also serves as the in-house coordinator for the museum's public engagement initiatives, and supervises the Portal Coordinator who is responsible for administration and support of the museum's Native American artisans program.

    Anyone interested in learning about New Mexico could benefit from the work done by the Supervisor of Education & Engagement. More specifically, the position serves teachers and student from around the state, as well as communities with whom the museum might formally engage.

    Ideal Candidate

    1) A university degree in education, history, cultural resource management, anthropology, or related studies
    (2) Experience with application of educational concepts such as object-based, experiential, and project-based learning within a
    museum environment or similar setting.
    (3) Experience using on-line platforms or appllcations--such as Canvas, Jamboard, and Zoom-and remote techniques such as
    activity kits and traveling trunks to support classroom learning.
    (4) Experience organizing or facilitating a public engagement program, managing a volunteer program, and training docents.
    (5) Experience managing projects, administering financial accounts, and supervising two or more employees.

    Minimum Qualification

    A Bachelor's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.
