    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

    The Houston Public Library seeks creative, innovative, and highly customer service-oriented Archivist II to serve at the African American Library at the Gregory School (Gregory). Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.  

    Located in the historic Freedman’s Town, the African American Library at the Gregory School is housed in the first African American school in Houston. The archive documents the experience of African American residents, businesses, institutions and neighborhoods in Houston and the surrounding region, with the primary objectives of locating, preserving, and making available to researchers the documentary evidence of local African American history.  

    Key duties and responsibilities of the Archivist II include:  

    • Manage the photographic, audiovisual materials and oral history collections. Activities include processing, collection care, and reproduction according to best practices. This may include acquisition, cataloging, and arranging and describing collections.  
    • Supervise digitization projects and daily activities in the Digitization Lab, and administrative duties as assigned. 
    • Coordinate reproduction requests and delegates duties to staff for image capture, file back-up and file delivery. 
    • Lead the oral history team in scheduling, interviewing, and processing oral histories. Create transcripts, generate metadata, manage preservation files, and upload content to audio video archive.
    • Provide specialized reference services and research assistance to the public in-person and electronically with a special focus on photography-based reference and reproduction services.
    • Coordinates Gregory’s archival programming efforts by assisting with programs and outreach efforts, conducting departmental tours, and representing the library and Gregory at public events. 
    • Oversee and coordinate temporary employees, interns, and volunteers to effectively complete tasks
    • Assists in grant writing for photograph and audiovisual collections and digitization and participates in grant-funded projects as needed
    • Work weekends, and evenings on a rotating basis.
    • Other duties as assigned.
