    Hours Required: 37.5 hours/week
    Salary: $40,000/year

    Summary

    Under the supervision of and working with the Head of Research Services, the Reference Archivist will work to develop research and instruction services and public engagement related to Amistad's collections. Keeping abreast of current research trends, the position will staff and monitor the Center's Reading Room desk and assist the unit head to liaison with educational and community constituents to engage with relevant initiatives and programs. The Reference Archivist also serves as the liaison with Amistad's social media presence. 

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provide in-depth reference service onsite and remotely to meet the needs of a diverse range of researchers.
    • Monitor handling of use of collections according to professional policies.
    • Retrieve and reshelve library and archival collections.
    • Manage requests for offsite collections.
    • Participate in instruction sessions on the use of collections for visiting groups.
    • Oversee social media preparation and coordination of Center's blog; assist with newsletter preparation.
    • Participate in development and creation of digital initiatives.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science school or equivalent degree, OR a post-graduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline and at least one year of related experience.
    • Training in archival/special collections theory and practice and familiarity with standards and best practices.
    • Knowledge of electronic resources, content management systems, and research methods
    • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
    • Strong knowledge of American ethnic history and broad knowledge in the humanities as demonstrated through academic degrees, training, or experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience processing archival collections.
    • Familiarity with digitization technology.
    • Understanding of current metadata and descriptive standards such as DACS, EAD, RDA, Dublin Core.
    • Interest and/or knowledge of American racial and ethnic history.
