Annual Salary: $60,000 to $70,000
Summary
This position is focused on the historical research needs of Rice University, particularly including those of the board, administration, and faculty as they evaluate past, present, and future university policies and decisions.
Performs archival research by request of Rice University board, faculty, administration, and archives staff, using reference tools such as archival finding aids at http://archives.library.rice.edu, published materials listed in the public catalog at library.rice.edu, digital sources available at scholarship.rice.edu, and others as needed.
Builds relationships with faculty, staff, students, and alumni in an effort to promote the mission of the university archives and build collections. Supervised by Head of Special Collections, Fondren Library.
Essential Functions
- Responds to university inquiries in a timely manner by conducting archival research and consulting with community members
- Communicates with board, faculty, administration, and archives staff for research directions, and to encourage transfer of archival records to Rice University Archives
- Writes articles, exhibits, social media posts, and as time allows, school and center histories.
- Speaks to classes, groups as outreach efforts
- Maintains clear project plans and notes in a shared environment
- Provides full citations for materials consulted
- Collaborates with archives staff to facilitate ingest of the university’s born digital archival collections
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Builds relationships on campus, encouraging inclusivity and diversity in the historical record
Required Qualifications
- Masters in history, library and information science, or a related field
- 3 years research experience
- Reading knowledge in one or more Western European languages sufficient to interpret bibliographic citations
- Demonstrated ability in working well with others
- Effective and accurate verbal and written communication skills in English
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately with details
- Ability to do precise, detailed work following specific instructions accurately
- Ability to work independently after initial training
Preferred Qualifications
- Historical research in an academic library setting, including archival materials
- Analysis of archival materials, such as academic papers, annotated bibliographies
- Collaborative relationship building in an academic setting
