    LSU Libraries seeks an Archivist to arrange and describe archival material held by LSU Libraries Special Collections. The incumbent assists in the implementation of EAD and archival management software; participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids; assists in accessioning archival acquisitions both in print and digital; and creates metadata for digital collections on the Louisiana Digital Library. They also provide public services at Special Collections service points and perform other duties as assigned.

    The desired candidate will possess and demonstrate experience applying archival theory, standards, best practices, and information technologies appropriate to archives, the willingness and ability to research and apply new technologies, and have a strong commitment to technical services in support of public services.

    Salary: $50,000 at the rank of General Librarian

    Job Responsibilities:

    • 70%Performs preliminary and full processing of manuscript and archives collections; researches historical and biographical information relevant to the collection; and creates finding aids and MARC catalog records utilizing knowledge of standards including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), EAD, MARC, LCSH, LCNAF, and other appropriate thesauri and authority lists used for indexing archival descriptions. Identifies and carries out rehousing and preservation treatments as needed.
    • 20% Works with Digital Services personnel to create metadata and publish manuscript and archives collections on-line via the Louisiana Digital Library. Assists in the accessioning of archival acquisitions both in print and digital. Assists in the implementation and use of archival management software; encodes finding aids in EAD using oXygen XML editor; and participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids.
    • 10% Performs advanced-level reference work to assist researchers in identifying and using Special Collections and other library materials.  Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree, MLIS or MLS, from an ALA accredited program, with a concentration in archival studies or management (equivalent work experience may substitute for concentration)
    • Minimum of the equivalent of 1 year, full-time experience arranging and describing archival collections.
    • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of open-source archives management software and preservation techniques.
    • Experience providing reference service in an archives, special collections, or academic setting; practically applying MPLP; and creating EAD finding aids.
    • Knowledge of Louisiana, southern U.S., and American history; and reading knowledge of French or Spanish.
