    Job Description

    UNLV University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative and collaborative tenure-track/tenured faculty member to serve as the Head of Special Collections Technical Services.  Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and Archives (SCA), the Head of Special Collections Technical Services is a key managerial position within the division and provides strategic direction, leadership, and expertise in accessioning, arranging, describing, cataloging, and preserving rare books, manuscript collections, and archives material in all formats. The Head of Special Collections Technical Services oversees the SCA's accessioning, arrangement and description, collection management, and conservation programs and directly supervises 3-4 FTE, including both faculty and classified employees. The position leads the planning, development, implementation, promotion, and assessment of the services provided for collections, ensuring an integrated and coordinated approach to accessioning, processing, and preservation of material in line with SCA and UNLV Libraries priorities. They will oversee development of standards, policies, and procedures for all technical services programs and projects.

    Collaboration is a core responsibility of this role. The Head of Special Collections Technical Services collaborates within SCA and across the Libraries to steward collections and ensure their discoverability and availability to researchers. This role will partner with colleagues to establish priorities and oversee cross-functional workflows. The Head of Special Collections Technical Services is also a core member of the SCA Area Leads Team which directs, coordinates, and advocates for the work and staff of the division. This position coaches and mentors direct and indirect reports in their department in order to develop staff in a positive and proactive manner. The Head of Special Collections Technical Services also contributes to day to day accessioning, processing, collection management, and conservation work as needed to support staff and achieve division goals.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.

    • Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
    • Three to five years of experience with the professional standards and practices related to accessioning, processing, cataloging, and preserving special collections material, including rare books, archives and manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual materials, and born-digital materials.
    • Knowledge of various archival and library descriptive standards, including but not limited to DACS, RDA, MARC, EAD, EAC, MODS, LCNAF, LCSH, and other thesauri.
    • Working knowledge of born digital archives, including planning and policy making for acquisition, imaging, preservation, and access.
    • Working knowledge of the systems necessary to ensure access to library and archival collections, including integrated library systems and other software used in academic and research libraries.
    • Familiarity with professional conservation and preservation standards.
    • Evidence of strong communication, analytical, organizational, leadership, problem solving, and project management skills. 
    • Experience developing cross-functional workflows and demonstrated ability to build collegial relationships necessary for effective collaboration.
    • Experience and demonstrated skill in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training and development, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and mentoring, and taking disciplinary action as necessary. Ability to be proactive, flexible and, collaborative as a team leader in order to accomplish departmental, library, and institutional goals.
    • Ability to meet university tenure and promotion standards, demonstrated by an existing record of scholarship or creative endeavors such as published articles, exhibitions, conference presentations, or book chapters, as well as a record of professional service to local, national, or international organizations.

    SALARY RANGE

    This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of rank of Assistant (Rank II, tenure-track) or Associate Professor (Rank III, tenure-track/tenure).  Minimum salary is $66,015. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market.
