    Summary 

    The TMC Library, McGovern Historical Center seeks a creative, well-organized, and self-motivated Archivist and Special Collections Librarian with demonstrated knowledge in both archival processing and cataloging. Reporting to the Head of the McGovern Historical Center, the position will manage a four-year grant funded project to process and make accessible the manuscript and rare book collections of John P. McGovern, MD. (The position will not continue beyond the funded four-year term.) The primary objectives of the position will be to improve description and access of archival materials, enhance bibliographic descriptions for more discoverability, and promote collections to potential researchers. In addition to project responsibilities, the position will be an active member of the department providing reference services, performing outreach activities, and working closely with patrons, donors, library staff, and institutional groups. The position will manage two distinct projects and develop department manuals to maintain the procedures and techniques beyond the four-year term.

    Education and Experience

    Required:

    1. Minimum education requirement is a Master’s Degree in library science from an ALA-Accredited program with some classes in archival science and cataloging/metadata; or an equivalent master’s degree in a related field.
    2. Some experience in an archival setting is preferred.
    3. The applicant should have a willingness to learn new skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision, supervise staff and volunteers, work closely with patrons and donors, and achieve mutually agreed upon goals.
    4. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
    5. Awareness of best archival practices is essential, such as preservation, metadata, and digitization.

    Preferred

    1. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
    2. Familiarity with the standards Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
    3. Familiarity or proficiency with archive management systems, such as ArchivesSpace or Access to Memory (AtoM).
    4. Familiarity with XML-based EAD programs, such as Oxygen.
    5. Familiarity with descriptive cataloging of rare and unique materials using controlled vocabularies and classification systems.
    6. Reading knowledge of at least one language other than English, preferably German, Latin, or French.

    Salary Range

    $50,000 – $55,000 plus professional development and funding for rare book school.
