    TITLE OF POSITION: Media Manager and Archivist - Contract

    DEPARTMENT: Administration 

    ANNUAL ENTRY SALARY: $50,000 - $60,000 depending on experience 

     GENERAL SUMMARY:

    The Media Manager and Archivist is responsible for the audio and video assets collected and created by Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB), including the creation of metadata records and is responsible for policies regarding the creation, storage, preservation, organization, description, and access to these materials. The Media Manager and Archivist is responsible for initiating and maintaining outreach, reference, and collection development activities for MPB’s archives and other digital asset collections. 
     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

    The Media Manager and Archivist provides a wide range of services in collaboration with the entire MPB team. Applicants must have the ability to complete the following essential job functions:

    • Lead and coordinate efforts with the identified external digitization partner, to transfer audio and video assets to tape or digital media as needed.
    • Access, arrange, describe, and otherwise process manuscripts, photographs, audio-visual assets, oral histories, electronic records, and other materials in accordance with standard and local principles and practices.
    • Assist in the appraisal of records and items within the collection. Maintain an accurate and complete collection description and inventory.
    • Assist in the development of strategies for the preservation and reformatting of materials in the collection.
    • Conduct basic preservation of materials such as cleaning and mending of damaged audio and visual material.
    • Manage expectations and formats with the digital partner throughout the digitalization process and maintain an overall knowledge of the process.
    • Creates and maintains a digital asset management system.
    • Manages video archive media inventory and the processing of media content for archival preservation using current best practices for media preservation and storage.
    • Oversees the curation and footprint of physical and digital assets and their integration into the media library using video file mastering, ingest/scan, or audio migration workflows.
    • Provide quality assurance of legacy metadata for accuracy, completeness and data integrity of records and related digital assets.
    • Ensure that the audiovisual collection items are accurately catalogued and indexed.
    • Assist in updating and maintaining internal audiovisual databases.
    • Assist in uploading newly digitized items in the newly created data management system.
    • Manage descriptive, technical, administrative and preservation metadata for both accessibility and long-term preservation of digital assets and related metadata.

     

    POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
    This is classified as a full-time, hourly, non-exempt, Non-State Service, Contract employment position.  Duties are routinely performed Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    This position is expected to be fully on-site.  Mostly standard office setting with access to archived and stored material.   This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. 

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES and QUALIFICATIONS: 

    This position has many responsibilities.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Leads projects assigned by management against pre-determined timelines.
    • Leads tape digitization project in its entirety to deliver content to video management system.
    • Maintains clean metadata practices in all media types to include video, audio, and still images.
    • Develops and implements policy guidelines that supports a file-based digital archive.
    • Manages archive media inventory and processing of media content for archival preservation using preservation and storage best practices.
    • Manages final delivery and archive of new content creation.
    • Manages raw media archive for completed projects.
    • Oversees final delivery and archive media of ongoing production projects to include archival of raw project media.
    • Understands the components and complexities of a digital archive management (DAM) system and strategizes on the efficient movement, conversion, and archiving of assets to the DAM.
    • Works with third party vendors to transfer audio and/or video assets to tape or digital medium as needed.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    KNOWLEDGE OF: 

    • Asset conversion process for digital archiving systems including process improvement and/or quality control methodology.
    • Broadcast tape formats and media formats.
    • Closed Captioning requirements.
    • Digital Media concepts and applications (Adobe Premiere, Adobe Media Encoder, AVID, Telestream Vantage).
    • Myers ProTrack (Broadcast Management System).

     

    SKILL IN: 

    • Accessing and manipulating tape archives.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Demonstrating effective time management and organizational skills to prioritize, organize, multi-task, accomplish work in a timely manner, and meet specified deadlines.
    • Digital Media Management.
    • Gathering complex data from multiple sources.
    • Taking ownership and action within the scope of the position to ensure and/or improve the success of Company products and services.
    • Verbal, non-verbal, and written communication, including listening and asking questions to uncover explicit and implicit needs.
    • Working with video and audio metadata in a MAM or DAM environment.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods, work in confined and possibly dimly lit spaces, have close visual acuity, stand, and talk, lift objects of less than twenty (20) pounds, and hear.  They must possess finely-tuned manipulative skills, which require hand-eye coordination, such as reading or typing, writing and filing are also required. Activities related to this position may also include frequent in-person interactions.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.  

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    A Bachelor’s degree in a Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or degree in Archival Studies with an emphasis in media archival management, preservation management or digital curation

    OR

    two more (2+) years of experience in an archive or media library working with video, film and sound formats

    AND/OR

    a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Masters degree in related field.
    • Experience with ingesting video into a Media Asset Management system.
    • Two years’ experience in a Broadcast/Digital Media technical environment.
    • Broadcast knowledge preferred.
