    Position Overview

    The Raynor Memorial Libraries at Marquette University seeks a collaborative, creative, enthusiastic professional for the position of University Archivist. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the University Archivist works closely with the Electronic Records Archivist. The University Archivist is responsible for the acquisition, appraisal, description, disposition and preservation of university records in all formats. The University Archivist supports requests for reference assistance from faculty, staff, students and Marquette administration, as well as from alumni and the general public, facilitating the use of all university records.

    In tandem with the Head of Special Collections and University Archives and the Electronic Records Archivist, the University Archivist will contribute to the development of policy and programming for the acquisition, access and use of university records. The University Archivist helps define and implement repository policies, workflows, and capabilities, and ensures that those are carried out across the institution.

    Essential Functions
    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Appraise, accession, process, and describe university records and faculty papers, in both digital and analog formats.
    • Provide reference and research support to campus and off-site patrons, including reproduction services.
    • Work with university offices in a variety of outreach activities (displays, events, reunions, anniversaries, etc.)
    • Consults with the Electronic Records Archivist and university departments on a variety of records issues.
    • Provide classroom instruction on use of primary sources upon request.
    • Develop digital collections and resources using the CONTENTdm platform (planning, scanning, metadata preparation, website design, etc.).
    • Train and supervise part-time student assistants and interns.
    • Participate in library and university committees, as appropriate

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science or advanced degree in archives administration, records management or other related field.
    • 3 years of experience in an archives or special collections and experience resulting in knowledge of principles and practices governing the management and preservation of university records and digital materials. 
    • Comprehensive knowledge of institutional archives, records management principles and practices, and digital preservation theory and practice. 
    • Understanding of principles of database management, enterprise architecture, and systems analysis. 
    • Knowledge of metadata standards, reformatting guidelines, and issues pertaining to institutional repositories. 
    • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, university administration, and library and curatorial staff. 
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
    • Demonstrated project management experience. 
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills. 
    • Demonstrated commitment to professional development

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Prior experience in an academic library or higher education setting.
    • Facility with ContentDM applications, including administrative client functionality.
    • Facility with Microsoft Access database management
    • Familiarity with and ability to apply archival standards to descriptive tools and digital resources (including but not limited to DACS, EAD, EAC-CPF, Dublin Core, OAIS, METS, MODS, PREMIS)
    • Working knowledge of current archival descriptive standards, intellectual property rights, and issues related to born-digital content and digital conversion of archival materials.
    • Experience in successful grant writing
