    Duties

    This position is located in the Office of the Legal Adviser, Office of Treaty Affairs (L/T). The Office advises the U.S. Government on all aspects of treaty law and procedures. The Office serves as the repository for records associated with upwards of 10,000 U.S. treaties and other international agreements. The archivist will participate in planning and implementing systems for managing and archiving this large body of records in accordance with bureau and Department policies.


    Responsibilities

    • Analyzes treaties, agreements, and records to make recommendations regarding their disposition and indexing.
    • Ensures that all treaties, agreements, and records are properly indexed and described in a computerized database and that the database is sufficiently annotated to provide for easy search and retrieval of those documents needed.
    • Collaborates with others in the preparation of various reports to Congress, treaty lists and digests, and other information regarding treaties and international agreements in the repository.
    • Takes appropriate actions to safeguard records in the repository from deterioration, damage, destruction, loss or from impairment of their value through disarrangement or alteration.
    • Prepares materials in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.


    Conditions of Employment

    • U.S. Citizenship is required.
    • Incumbent will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
    • One year probationary period, unless excepted by regulation.
    • Verification of employment eligibility in the United States is required.


    Qualifications

    • Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements, including education and any selective placement factors described below by the closing date of this announcement.
    • If you are qualifying based on education OR if there are mandatory education requirements listed below, you MUST submit a copy of your college transcript with your application.
    • Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service that provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
    • Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
    • Experience maintaining a repository of records comprised of paper and electronic files.
    • Experience collaborating with various officials on the preparation of reports regarding treaties and international agreements.
    • There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-12 position.
