    This position will be filled at either the Library Professional 1 or Library Professional 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


    Come join one of the most dynamic and largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is Los Alamos National Laboratory’s classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC’s collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security. The NSRC’s holdings also include the hand-written notebooks of over a dozen Nobel Prize winning scientists who worked at the Lab.


    We are looking for archivists or librarians with a background in archives, library science, physical sciences, history, or records management to help us digitize our vast holding and provide assistance on quality control and metadata development.


    Library Professional Level 1: ($55,400 - $71,700)


    The successful candidate will:

    • Digitize the NSRC’s collections. Archival media includes paper, microfilm, microfiche, motion picture film, video, and others.
    • Assist the NSRC Preservation Team Leader in entering metadata and indexing information about the digitized material.
    • Provide Quality Control for the digitized materials.
    • Assist the Archivist Team Leader accession new material into the NSRC’s collections.
    • Assist the Research Librarian Team Leader with customer research requests.


    Library Professional Level 2: ($87,800 - $107,000)


    In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

    • Digitize the NSRC’s collections. Archival media includes paper, microfilm, microfiche, motion picture film, video, and others.
    • Create metadata/indexing information in collaboration with the NSRC Preservation Team Leader and NSRC Chief Librarian to assist in the retrieval of the material.
    • Provide Quality Control for the digitized materials as well as the metadata and indexing.
    • Independently accession new material into the NSRC’s collections.
    • Independently provide research librarian support to customers.
    • Write occasional articles and blogs about the material contained in the NSRC.

    The successful candidate for either level must have a passion for archival preservation and research, be details oriented, demonstrate excellent customer service, and have an intellectual curiosity to learn about the nature of our scientific/engineering collections. This position requires a strong commitment to security, safety, and quality of operations.
