Last fall, Southwest Collection and Special Collections Library archivist Monte Monroe stood in the State Capitol to be named Texas State Historian.

His journey to that moment has been one that has seen him go from a janitor paying for school, to an officiator at the Olympics, to an archivist at Texas Tech and more.

This journey began in Houston where Monroe was born. Raised in Orange County, Monroe attended Stephen F. Austin University, where he got his undergraduate degree. He said his passion for history began at a young age, and his main influence came from his teachers and family members who possessed great storytelling abilities.
