Voices of the African American Southwest: Challenges and Successes of Archival Representation
Chair: Donna Morales Guerra, Trinity University
Dr. Matthew Whitaker’s keynote address at the SSA 2012 annual meeting made it clear that
archivists in the Southwest region of the United States need to work diligently to seek out, preserve
and make African American historical materials available. The roundtable will feature short
presentations from participants to discuss the various challenges and successes of collecting,
processing and providing and promoting access to African American materials. A particular focus
will be on questions raised by the article by Rabia Gibbs, “The Heart of the Matter: The
Developmental History of African American Archives,” which appeared in the American Archivist
(Vol. 75, No. 1, Spring/Summer 2012) and on experiences of session attendees.
