The University of Houston-Clear Lake Archives and Special Collections in the coastal Houston, Texas, region, is looking to partner with an applicant to serve as a host for the Society of Southwest Archivists Archivist-in-Residence program’s upcoming cycle in 2024. According to SSA’s website, the Archivist-in-Residence program “is offering a $5,000 stipend for one graduate student (or recent graduate within two years) to receive an Archivist-in-Residence opportunity. The purpose of this residency is three-fold: 1. To offer upcoming and new professionals with paid career development opportunities to apply knowledge in archives, libraries, museums, or a related field; 2. To teach new archivists how to accurately calculate the value of their education, experience, and overall value as an archivist; and 3. To provide an opportunity for archival organizations to work toward the long-term goal of eliminating unpaid work within the field. The residency may last up to 12 weeks to be completed by the end of the current calendar year. The resident will receive a one-year complimentary membership to the Society of Southwest Archivists.” The potential applicant must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program or have graduated within two years of the program application date: March 1, 2024. The UHCL Archives and Special Collections preserves, arranges and describes, and makes publicly available original historical records related to the communities the university serves. The Archives is the official repository for UHCL records, including past presidents’ papers and student publications. We hold the papers of former Johnson Space Center and NASA personnel documenting human space flight history in our Human Space Flight Collection, and collect archival materials from individuals and organizations in the Clear Lake Area of Texas for our Clear Lake Area Collection. And, we are the custodians for the NASA’s official Johnson Space Center History Collection, providing local and general public access to invaluable original records on manned space flight history. 2024 is UHCL’s 50th anniversary, and the Archives is doing numerous processing, digitization, exhibition, event, and research projects surrounding this history using its archival collections. We need help primarily in 2024 with university archival materials. The UHCL Archives is looking for potential SSA Archivist-in-Residence program partners on the following types of archival work and projects: photograph digitization, documents digitization, and archival processing. We have several photo scanners, a large book scanner, AV digitization equipment, sufficient archival supplies, and space to support a candidate for this program.

Anyone wishing to discuss this possibility with the UHCL Archives should contact the Associate Director Matthew Peek for more information. Please email the archives at archives@uhcl.edu with the subject line "Archivist-in-Residence Project". Deadline for project discussion and time to generate program application paperwork for the UHCL Archives is February 24, 2024.
